This educational program focuses the attention of healthcare professionals on the very real role they can play in promoting smoking cessation among their patients and the community at large. It explores ways in which health professionals can initiate conversations about smoking cessation and keep the conversation going, as well as update General Practitioners, Pharmacists and Practice Nurses on current approaches to getting patients to stop smoking. A series of four case-based modules overview the extent of the problem and offer some new insights into why people become addicted to smoking — often a good starting place for understanding why they have trouble quitting and helping them find the key to success. Many GPs are time poor and therefore focus on addressing the primary reason for the patient presentation. The lack of Medicare items for GP or nurse-provided advice, along with the absence of an Enhanced Primary Care Disease Management item for smoking cessation, represent a significant barrier to GP and nurse engagement in the smoking cessation process. Thus, in many cases, smoking cessation failures are the result of inadequate follow up and the absence of ongoing support.
